Elle McNicoll’s gorgeous debut novel is the book that I’ve bought the most copies of, putting it in class reading corners and into the hands of children. If it isn’t in your school library, it absolutely should be. It is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, funny and sad and hugely important as an authentic and relatable own voices representation of neurodivergence. So many children navigate school while feeling like an outsider, and this story will help them feel seen and build their confidence both in being themselves and advocating for themselves. Not only that – it’s a great read that will make you smile and bring a tear to your eye. The language is clear and accessible, the book isn’t intimidating or lengthy and there’s a great BBC adaptation.
