My Review

I was so excited about this one, as Beth O’Brien’s debut novel, Wolf Siren, is one of those books that’s really stayed with me. Feather Vane is the tale of the twin children of Ceridwen the Enchantress, who have been training all their lives to become sorcerers. We join them as they are about to turn thirteen, when they will receive the first quests of their own on magical scrolls. But as their famous and talented mother is sent to aid a village overrun by incredibly rare magical creatures, disaster strikes and instead of the gentle start they’re hoping for as inexperienced new sorcerers, they’re faced with completing her daunting task and ridding the village of a green-toothed hag, fiery salamanders, a huge nest of gnomes and a squall of sylphs.

This enchanting story is packed with magical creatures, suspicious villagers, adventure and potions. It is told by each of the twins in turn, and I loved how much their experiences and viewpoints differed, yet both were so compelling and relatable. As well as its delightful plot, this book also explores the sway of public opinion, self-belief, the difficulties of being visually different and coping with the judgment of others. This book oozes charm, warmth and magic and would be a fantastic addition to a KS2 library and a great class read.
