Animal-lover, Christopher isn’t allowed up the mysterious hill near his grandfather’s remote Scottish home, but of course he can’t resist. There he finds mythical creatures and discovers that his grandfather guards the gateway between our world and the magical Archipelago, home to Mal, who is being hunted by a murderer. She begs Christopher’s help to save the magical creatures of the Archipelago, who are dying out.
This has the feel of a modern classic, with epic worldbuilding, well-rounded characters, a little philosophy and a touch of humour. Katherine Rundell writes beautiful prose and with all the magical creatures, this is a great read for confident upper KS2 kids who enjoy a fantastical adventure.
